Why employing veterans will help your company in a recession

30 January 2023

Veteran Employees are what you want during a recession – here’s why

The entire world is dealing with the aftermath of Covid, with inflation and interest rates rising. It seems inevitable that the UK will see some sort of recession over the coming months.

In October 2022, even though the UK was going through political turmoil, the job market was still robust, with vacancies outnumbering the amount of candidates. With the economy slowing and the country in the grip of a cost-of-living crisis, inevitably, companies will tighten their belts and look to keep head count to the minimum. However, for companies who need more staff, what should they look for and how should they go about getting the right people?

We have found that service leavers add value to their employers, with 90% more satisfied after hiring a veteran. The main reason comes down to mindset, attitude, and aptitude. Skills can be learned, qualifications can be gained, but mindset is intangible.

So how do you ensure that you hire the right person to grow with your company during a recession?

People are not an inanimate commodity. It is straightforward to measure and find out their skill level, but a whole different scenario to gauge their mindset. There are swathes of books, blogs, and articles on mindset, motivation, goal setting and attainment, but few have any real-world methods of measuring attitude and mindset. It is only really possible to assess somebody’s attitude by having contact with them and seeing their responses to situations. Determining somebody’s mindset needs to involve lived experiences.

Military personnel must be team players, goal orientated and mission focused. These qualities form the framework of the core values that military personnel live daily. A common saying in the military is that ‘No battle plan ever survives 10 seconds past first contact with an enemy’ (Moltke). Part of their make-up is to be flexible and adapt to the situation no matter how that changes. To have people in your business who have worked in tough environments, who are goal focused and adaptable, will ensure that your business is taken care of if we enter a recession.

Here at Ex Mil Recruitment, we can provide solutions to your hiring needs, whether you require full-time permanent staff or short-term contractors.
